I was inspired to make this piece by the beautiful Celtic and Viking brooches. The simple mechanics of this style of fastening makes it suitable to use as a brooch or scarf or kilt pin.
I have made the brooch with very thick copper wire to form the shape, which I have hand forged and then hammered which makes the structure very strong, whilst also hammering a textured detail into the main frame. I have wrapped the frame with more copper wire, which is shaped to enhance the spayed ends of the circular brooch. These frame wires have then been hand woven with fine copper wire and embellished with faceted Garnet ovals, which are wrapped in copper wire, holding them securely in place and adding an attractive detail. I have also added two lines of Garnet button rondelles, to further enhance the curve of the brooch.
The whole piece has been lightly oxidised, to highlight the detail.
This is a chunky brooch, reminiscent of the designs of the Iceni tribe.
The pin is made from thick 2mm wire, which I have filed and sanded into a point. The thick wire of the pin makes this brooch unsuitable for delicate fabrics. It is perfect for chunky knits!
The brooch measures 2" across and 2 1/8" tall. The pin is 2 2/3" long
