This design was inspired by the beautiful Celtic and Viking brooches. Penannular brooches are also known as Fibulas or Celtic brooches. They are an open circle with ornate terminals, which secure the oversized pin that is attached to the body of the brooch and can slide freely.
This particular design uses two contrasting weaves, which lead into the terminals of the brooch, with flowing lines of wire that surround faceted briolette’s and decorated with spirals that echo the Celtic influence.
The simple mechanics of the fastening makes it suitable to use as a brooch or scarf, kilt or hat pin.
This brooch measures 1 ¼” across and 1 1/3” tall, the pin is 2 1/3” long in total. The wire measurements given can be used for stones up to and including 15mm, giving you a finished brooch size of 1 ½” across and 1 2/3” tall.
This tutorial is packed with tips, trouble shooting tricks and even has notes on variations at the end. With over 85 close up colour photos, there is no room left for guesswork, as I walk you through the techniques required to make this beautiful piece of jewellery.
