Lesley Smith - February 2017 I am the Curator of Tutbury Castle in Staffordshire and jewellery designer Abby Hook has been coming to the Castle for some years showing her considerable skills to crowds of visitors who are amazed by her intricate work. Abby was the only choice for me when I chose my tiara designer for my wedding. I had a particularly difficult task for her which was to produce a glamorous Viking ship tiara. I am a sixteenth century historian and my husband , Dr. Gareth Williams, head of Viking and Anglo Saxons at the British Museum. He had always said if he married it would be to a Viking Ship as they had such a wonderful shape. He had no idea what I was planning and did not see the tiara until I came down the tiny aisle of the royal chapel at Glamis Palace on 6th December 2014. The walls of the chapel in red silk and paintings on the ceiling with candles ablaze made the setting exquisite. The beautiful lines of the tiara caught the honey light and cries of pleasure at the sight of the ship (not me) from other Viking specialists in the chapel. Gareth at the altar lit up at the sight of me and he understood immediately the fun I was having in fulfilling his marriage request. I know Abby most carefully researched the Viking ships, considered the art form and at the same time had to make the tiara wearable, comfortable and glamorous. It was not easy, for whilst the work was underway, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and the wedding would clash with chemotherapy sessions and had lost a large portion of my long hair cut short for the day. Abby considered all this and the tiara was a sensation. It is now on display in a great Viking study and people push past the artefacts and swords to stand in wonder at the sight of the fantastic workmanship and creative talent (as well as a touch of engineering). It seems to have its own light! The tiara is a treasure and everyone agrees it is, perhaps one day to sit in a museum itself as a unique piece of design from one woman to another showing beauty and strength. Meanwhile, I have been given the “all clear” and I know that wedding day was even more joyful because of her talent.
Mary Morris - March 2017 I have been making jewellery as a hobby for sometime and took a few classes. I was rather afraid of wirework - I liked the look but thought that doing it would be difficult. I start some very simple things, then I saw some Viking Knit and was blown away. After some Internet research I came across Abby's website. I bought the kit and tools and it arrived the next day ! The instructions were very clear and easy to follow. Since then I have made a number of pieces from Abbey's kit and tutorials and have had many compliments. Her book is well worth a read too.
Amy White - February 2017 As I was searching for bridal hairstyle ideas, I saw a few photos of brides with real flowers in their hair and really liked the idea of adding a little 'something' to my hair for the wedding. With the weather being so hot in Queensland, I didn't like the idea of having a brown wilted flower in my hair by the end of the day and I hadn't even heard of hair jewelry until about 6 months before my wedding when I spoke with Abby. I'm not someone who wears bulky jewelry so wasn't sure if hair jewelry would be a possibility for me, but Abby and I discussed the possibilities and she was an endless source of knowledge and ideas. We spoke a lot about my personal style, and what I was hoping for.... how I was looking for something graceful, natural and not too much 'bling'. I was blown away when I saw the finished product, it was - and still is - just perfect. My hairpiece was given so many compliments on the day. It truly completed my wedding outfit and suits my taste perfectly. She's a magician! Abby also made a smaller version of the hair jewelry for my 3 year old daughter, and matching stone cufflinks for my husband. Even my wedding hairdresser here in Australia wanted her details and I will always highly recommend her to anyone who is seeking to add a unique touch to their special day.
Janet Bidwell - February 2017 I have purchased many pieces of jewellery from Abby over the last ten years for myself and for special gifts for family and friends. Four pieces have been special commission pieces for family members and one piece was a beautiful necklace and bangle sterling silver set . I wanted something in memory of my dad and Abby made this for me from a photograph of some beautiful flowers that he grew. Her designs are stunning and she has made just what i wanted as a lasting memory. I am already thinking about the next piece of jewellery from Abby.
Natasha Cabral - February 2017 When I was planning my wedding, I had a very clear vision of what I wanted for my jewellery. I had been given a few other pieces that had been made by Abby as gifts and knew she was the right person to make exactly what I wanted. I certainly wasn't disappointed. Abby understood my vision and made such beautiful pieces. I was very proud to wear them on my special day. I still wear my necklace all these years later.
Kelly Hill - November 2015 Completely in awe with everything from way it arrived and was packaged to craftsmanship and beauty of the piece. Much thanks.
Carmen Ko - January 2015 I haven't started yet but have taken a look at the book. I found it giving clear procedural instructions. The pictures are of good quality so are the descriptions. I'm particularly impressed by the friendly and helpful attitude of Abby. The efficiency with which she sent me the book is also favourably surprising!
Jennifer Brenner - March 2013 I asked Abby to make the obsidian eclipse pendant for me as a bespoke item. I provided the cabochon & beads, she provided the rest of the materials and the design. She is professional, conscientious, communicative and incredibly fast. She informed me when the materials arrived, sent me a sketch to approve within one day, and had the piece finished within the next two days. The result is a striking, one of a kind piece with presence, and I am thrilled with it! Of course, as always, the workmanship is top-quality.
